International Seminar : Non-Human Primate in Biology, Conservation and Biomedical Research
Indonesia, a country of over 17000 islands in equatorial Southeast Asia, has a wide range of habitats with abundant biodiversity, including 40 species of non human primates. Indonesia as a ‘megadiverse’ country is at risk due to rapid ecological changes such as deforestation, driven by the increase of human population, resulting in high demands for food, forest products, and energy. These rapid ecological change is depleting non-human primates population in the wild, a situation leads into critical efforts to better understand factors that influence the conservation status of the Indonesian primates. To achieve the above concern, studies on primates conservation and biology aspects such as reproduction, behavior, genetic, habitat, and population, especially the critically endangered species need to be explored by the primatology society.
Primate Research Center at Bogor Agricultural University (PRC-IPB) initiated its program by establishing sustainable breeding facilities, both in semi-natural and in captive habitats setting in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Tinjil Island semi-natural habitat breeding facility is home for more than 1400 long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) with introduced breeders that had been screened and were free from certain pathogens; while two captive-breeding colony of long-tailed macaques and pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) were established in Darmaga and Bogor areas. Theses breeding facilities have been critically important support for the three major programs at the center, i.e. Biology, Conservation, and Biomedical Research using nonhuman primates.
In conjuction with the IPB PRC 25th anniversary, we invited our collaborators among the primatologist societies at national and international level to participate in this anniversary seminar to share their work and expertise as contribution to the above mentioned concerns. The general topics to be covered in the seminar are grouped into Conservation, Biology, and Biomedicine.
